Dating Apps, Rejection, and Hooking Up

Thanks to KALW radio, especially host Joseph Pace and producer Sarah Stodder, for inviting me to speak on dating apps and modern dating.

The World of Dating Apps – KALW Radio

A very brief summary of the in-depth discussion after the break:

  1. Is there a generational gap when it comes to dating apps and meeting not face to face? You bet, but dating apps are also safe outlets to soften the blow of the fear of rejection we all have. So it’s also a facet of safe opportunities to date more.
  2. What do most people feel are the main benefits of dating apps? Aside from the avoidance of rejection, it’s just a smart option for those that are busy with work, life, and friends.
  3. Have dating apps contributed to the degradation of social skills? In certain aspects – some can say yes, but some can also frame it as a shift to technology.
  4. Are people less inclined to be committed as a result of the rise of dating apps? Yes, absolutely. When you envision that the next best thing is just a swipe away…
  5. But I want to meet people organically! We all do, but where in your day/week/month are you doing that? That’s where the convenience and ease of dating apps come in.
  6. Am I going to be safe meeting people from dating apps, or online dating sites? The amount of safety associated with a person you meet online is exactly the same as a person you meet anywhere in public.
  7. Are dating apps really just for hookups? Absolutely not. Just like old school dating sites used to be perceived as being full of “creeps, weirdos, and desperate people,” they have become normalized enough where there is a certain critical mass – you’ll find people on there looking for anything and everything.
