Taking any joke head-on with success.

There aren’t many ways to take a joke head-on.

Almost every way you go, you either demonstrate some kind of insecurity or inject awkwardness into your conversation.

Today’s quick tip is about an easy way to deflect a joke and demonstrate a sense of security and comfort in yourself.

Better yet, it’s an easy template that allows you to think on your feet immediately, and create witty banter.

When you are faced with a joke at your expense, all you need to do is exaggerate it to the 10th degree. For example:

Patrick, those shoes are disgustingly dirty.
I know, a homeless man wouldn’t accept them.

Patrick, the 1980’s called and they want their haircut back.
Uh, try the 1880’s.

Patrick, your cooking sucks.
Yeah, at least you’re living to tell the tale unlike last time.

You make a joke out of the joke, and in one fell swoop, signal that (1) you’re comfortable enough to poke fun of yourself and (2) quick enough on your feet to banter. It’s exceedingly easy to use this guideline to address and deflect any joke thrown at you smoother than butter.
